It is a town of medieval origins, of the province of Trento, located on the western slopes of Mount Lefre and dominated by the imposing structure of Castel Ivano. The town's name, attested already in the XII century, derives, for the first part, from the name "Giovanni", which in Serbian-Croatian "Ivan", with reference to the patron Saint of the church, while the second part , comes from the Latin "fractus" (broken), with probable reference to the easy tilling of the soil of the surrounding lands. The districts of Ivano and Fracena were founded in the Middle Ages, built around the castle and the inhabitants obtained the grant of the lands surrounding the manor, in exchange of military assistance in case of attack or defense. In 1496, the Emperor Maximilian I granted the jurisdiction of the castle to the noble Family Wolchenstein of Rodenegg that preserved the domain until the First World War. Sites of Interest: - Castel Ivano, an imposing fortress strategically located between Valsugana and the Valley of Tesino. It is currently privately owned and is open only during cultural events. Perfectly preserved, it is interesting example of military architecture of different architectonic styles: from the medieval one of the walls and the Renaissance one of the residence; - the Church of San Vendemiano is considered one of the oldest churches in the valley of Strigno, although documented only since the XVI century. Rebuilt in the XVII century, for a long period has been transformed into a hermitage. It suffered considerable damage during the First World War; - the Chapel of Our Lady of Caravaggio, which was built by the faithful, after a period of famine and cholera brought by the Napoleonic wars.
