Fossò

Description

The name is linked to the Latin word "fossadum," probably in reference to a minor branch of the river Brenta. Municipality in the province of Venice, situated on the border with the territory of Padua, in the area of the Riviera del Brenta, the territory of Fossò extends over a fertile plain, a factor that has favored agriculture.
Certainly inhabited since Prehistoric times, there is no sufficient data or presence of traces to determine with certainty the date of the foundation. The first documents that report the existence of a settlement date back to the earliest years of the XI century and refer to an act in which these lands (including Fossò) were granted to the Abbot of St. Hilary. Until the XV century, the town submitted the rule of Padua and in part, the jurisdiction was assigned to the feudal lords of Mirano. The distance of the town compared to the main roads of the times, avoided its direct involvement in the clashes that featured Padua as the protagonist, with the exception of an attack suffered in the second half of the XIV century. In the early years of the XV century Fossò became part of the territories inglobed into the Serenissima Republic of Venice, experiencing an important period of peace and prosperity until the advent of Napoleon. Later, under the Hapsburg government, the municipality was annexed to the nearby district of Sandon.

Attractions:
- the Parish Church of San Bartolomeo, built in the XVIII century, has recently submitted important refurbishments. During the restorations, traces of the original XIV century building were discovered. Inside are preserved important paintings by the artists Longhi and Vason and an XVIII century fresco, attributed to the artist Canal;
- the Church of St. James the Apostle in Sandon, of ancient origins, features the forms conferred during renovations of 1759. At the same time, the building was flanked by the construction of a Bell Tower;
- the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, which preserves within XVIII century frescoes and an impressive Venetian altar;
- Villa Salvatori, built in the XVII century, features a beautiful porch;
- Casa Mulinari;
- Villa Caffrè.
