Danta di Cadore

Nuvoloso pioggia moderata 7.5°C
cloudy moderate rain

Description

The town's name has several interpretations, but the most accepted theory seems to indicate its proximity to a cave, from the Latin "de antrum".
Municipality in the province of Belluno, located at over 1300 meters of altitude, between green meadows and pine forests, the village is surrounded by mountains and enjoys panoramic views of extraordinary beauty. It is the ideal place for trekking between the mountain trails and offers the unique sensations of a pristine environment.
Traces of prehistoric settlements have been found in the Cadore area and it is assumed that the first settlements were established between the VI and VII centuries by populations from the Val Pusteria, that sheltered here to avoid the barbarian invasions. In the XIII century, a particular subdivision and land management was implemented, the "Regole" (rules), which, in turn, entrusted to the head of each village a period of decisions. In the XIII century, the local authorities imposed a series of "regole" (a regulation of the lands), later cancelled by Napoleon, while in the XV century the area submitted the domain of the Serenissima Republic of Venice. After a short period of Napoleonic government and Austrian domain, the Cadore area was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
Attractions:
- the Parish Church of St. Rocco and St. Sebastian, already mentioned in documents dating from the XV century, it was completely restored in the late XVIII century. The massive church bell tower, with a square base, is delineated by large ledges that surround it entirely, while the belfry is open and features airy double lancet windows and on the top is placed a clock. It is complemented by unusual battlements. Inside the church features two wooden statues, artwork of the artist De Martin, three important altarpieces, of which one depicting St. Rocco and St. Sebastian by Vecellio, another by Da Rin, and one by Barberis and two wooden statues of the sculptor Demetz;
- the Church of Santa Barbara, located in the town's outskirts, was recently built where once, in the XVIII century, was installed a capital, object of devotion, in a point that dominates the entire valley below. It features a charming building with gable roof, completed by a bell tower topped by a spire. Inside is preserved a valuable XVIII century altar;
- the Paleontological Museum
