Custonaci

Poco nuvoloso 17.6°C
mostly sunny

Description

Custonaci (from the Greek word Kustunaki, meaning small chestnut) is set on the eastern side of the gulf of Bonaci. It developed at the end of the XVIII century following initiatives by the Bourbons to populate the area with the granting of rights to un-cultivated land, around a preexhistent Sanctuary of Our Lady, an interesting place of cult and a destination for pilgrims since the XIV century. Restructured in the XVI century. with the addition of living quarters and fortifications, it contains a 16th c. panel painting of the Madonna. Outside the church is a fine mosaic parvis made of river pebbles. Along the coast it is possible to admire interesting and suggestive grottoes, such as the Rumena Grotto and the Miceni one, with important Prehistoric remains.
