Description

Chiuro is a small town in the middle Valtellina area, located on the right bank of the river Adda, known as an important center for the production of wine such as: "Valtellina Superiore DOCG" and "Sforzato da meditazione". The area was inhabited since the prehistoric times, as evidenced by the findings revealed in the area of Castionetto and now preserved at the Museum of History and Art of Valtellina in Sondrio. Coins of the Roman era, however, attest to the presence here of troops, or Roman merchants. The town is mentioned for the first time in a document of 918 with the name "Clure" (which is obviously the root Rhaetian-Etruscan of Clur). In the XI century Chiuro was under the control of the Parish of Treviso. In the XIII century it was proclaimed municipality. The population was divided into Quadri (square districts) and enjoyed a moderate prosperity, thanks to the strong position of the districts situated along the Valeriana (the ancient road that ran through the entire Valtellina area) and the road that led North towards Teglio. The area enjoyed a period of particularly good fortune in the first half of the XV century with Stefano Quadrio, a skilled leader, loyal to the Visconti of Milan. Another period of economic prosperity of the town coincided with the XVIII century, when all churches and aristocratic palaces were adorned with ornaments and decorations.

Among the sites of interest, not to miss:
- the ancient castle of Stefano Quadrio, fortified residence remodeled over the centuries and today the seat of a winery;
- the Parish of Saints James and Andrew, that already existed in the XIII century. The exterior façade features a very simple aspect, just embellished the bottom four pilasters, the interior, however, is in baroque style with decorations, stucco, statues and paintings from the XVIII century.
- the XVI century Portico of the Discipline with the adjoining frescoed chapel;
- the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve (XVII century);
- the Parish of St. Bartholomew, in the district of Castionetto Built around the year 1000;
- an impressive tower in Castionetto, which probably belonged to the Quadri;
- Palazzo Quadrio de 'Maria Pontaschelli (XVI-XVIII century) and the other palaces.
