Description

Town in the province of Verbania, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, whose municipality territory also includes a series of rocky islands that face towards Cannero Riviera, known as the Castles of Cannero, on which lie the Castle Malpaga and the Fortress Vitaliana, both built in the XVI century. Very well connected to the mainland, by boat and by road, it is crossed by the stream Cannobino which flows into the lake. Its particular location and its favorable climate attract a lot of tourists.
The discovery of some tombs in the area attest the presence of a settlement already in pre-Roman times, while the town itself has Roman origins, as evidenced by still present typical urban structure of a Roman camp. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Cannobio, presumably was spared from the devastating effects of the invasions of the peoples of the North. Surely it was the seat of a royal court in the X century and an important trading center in the Middle Ages. Linked for centuries to the city of Milan, in the XIX century, it passed to the Diocese of Novara and then became territory of the Savoy. The inhabitants resisted in 1859 an attack brought by Austrian troops.

Not to miss:
- the Sanctuary of Mercy, built by St. Charles Borromeo in the XVI century, designed by Beretta. The features of the façade are not the original ones, but the result of a recent renovation. The Baroque interior is composed of a single nave with an altar that features a valuable altar piece depicted by the artist Ferrari and preserves paintings of the XVII and XIX centuries;
- the XVI century Oratory of Santa Marta preceded by a beautiful front porch. Inside are preserved a wooden altar and a Madonna with Child, probably artworks of the artist Procaccini;
- the Collegiate Church of San Vittore, which was built in the XVIII century in place of a much older pre-existing building. The façade was renovated in the first half of the XIX century;
- the Palace del Ragione (of Reason) was built in the XIII century and remodeled in the XVII century. Under the porch are featured two Roman tombs and to the right, there is the municipal tower, in Romanesque style, dating from the XIII century, which was originally built in stone and was the Bell tower of the ancient church of San Vittore;
- the Castles of Cannero, of which still remain part of the old fortifications, dating from the XI-XII centuries;
- the monument of the Lion, which dates back to the late XIX century.
