Florence

Florence celebrates the legend of two great queens of France, Catherine and Marie de' Medici, in an exhibit entitled Catherine and Marie de' Medici: women in power scheduled from October 24, 2008 to February 8, 2009 at Palazzo Strozzi.

This exhibit narrates how these two famous queens, Catherine and later Marie de' Medici, used suggestive images to legitimize their claims to rule enemy families and factions after the deaths of their respective husbands.

Fifteen monumental tapestries will be on display, based on the epic poem, "Histoire de la Royne Arthémise", written in 1561-1562 with the intent to celebrate queen Catherine de'Medici, widow of Henry the Second of France and ruler of the kingdom. The tapestries were woven several decades later, starting in 1607, commissioned by Henry the Fourth in honor of his wife Marie and depict episodes from the life of the two ancient queens of Caria, both named Artemisia.

Some of the numerous curiosities of note include Catherine de' Medici's Talisman, a letter with one of her drawings that depicts an outdoor banquet with her husband Henry the Fourth and a valuable jewelry collection.
